Cape Town considers R20 billion eastern suburb facelift

An ambitious multi-billion rand proposal by Intersite to revitalise the eastern part of Cape Town’s CBD will be investigated by the Mayoral Committee.

Far reaching judgment

A recent judgment, delivered on 22 September 2009, will have far reaching effects on the use of the DFA as an instrument for township establishment. It declares the DFA Chapters V and VI invalid / unconstitutional and suspends the DFA for 18 months in order for the DFA to be corrected and also awaits the submission of the judgment to the Constitutional Court. This also affects the township approvals for low income housing projects.

World Habitat Day 2009

By 2025, UN projections suggest that almost 1.2 billion people will be living in the Commonwealth’s urban areas. Today the figure is about three-quarters of a billion. Every day it increases by 65,000. Cliff Hague, Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Association of Planners said that growth at this pace and scale poses fundamental challenges to governments at all levels and in all countries.

UN Habitat tackles climate change

Between 28-30 May 2009, UN Habitat in association with the Commonwealth Association of Planners (CAP) and the Institute for Housing and Development Studies (HIS) in Rotterdam held a workshop with invited participants in Rotterdam. The workshop was designed to engage on what supportive action UN Habitat could take with regard to climate change and urban planning. The Cities in Climate Change Initiative (CCCI) is UN Habitat's "flagship programme of the Sustainable Development Network (SUD-NET)". The intention is to support governments in their response to the dealing with the impact of changing climates and to "take bold steps in reducing cities' climate footprint"

Sapi attends Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Bosberaad, 19-21 June

Sapi chairman, Ashraf Adam gave a presentation at a bosberaard hosted by hosted by the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (formerly the Department of Local and Provincial Government). Adam says South Africans need to work together to create sustainable livelihoods, build economic and social infrastructure and implement a comprehensive national development strategy.

2009 Mercer Quality Of Living Survey

"While Zurich, Switzerland’s largest city and the country’s financial capital, is no longer number one, three Swiss cities make it into the top 10 of 'best' cities in the world. According to new research, Vienna, Austria’s capital, is now the city most people would like to call their home. Geneva retains its position in third place, while Vancouver and Auckland are now joint fourth in the rankings of best cities in the world, a survey prepared by Mercer Consulting. Overall, European cities continue to dominate the top locations in this year’s survey, with German cities particularly well represented among the top 50. Düsseldorf, Munich and Frankfurt are all among the top 10 best cities."

AUSAID Scholarships

Find attached a call for applications by AusAID for 12 - 24 months postgraduate studies in Australia for 2010. It will target the private and public sectors and is aimed at post graduate level (Masters and Phd) and will focus on diverse disciplines including Public Management, Agriculture, Mining and Natural Resources, Water and Sanitation and Town and Regional Planning. Students will study at an Australian University, but will need an employer to take them back to their home country to ensure recirculation.
